Together, watch Chef Lily’s video. Afterward, you might:

  • Explain that Lily didn’t always want to try new tastes (such as sour lime!), but when a new taste is added to something she already likes, such as tomatoes, she’s surprised by how much she likes it!
  • Talk about the different tastes: sour, sweet, salty, bitter, and umami (the protein-y taste of meat, eggs, milk, and beans like soybeans). Help children think of a few examples of each.

When you’re out shopping with your little one, you might buy a lime (or lemon) and try Lily’s tip yourselves (on cucumber slices, lettuce, tomato, or any other vegetable). First, invite children to smell the outside of the fruit. They can watch as you cut it apart, then touch their finger to the pulp and have a tiny taste.
