Identify feelings with a Sesame Street video.
- Gather children to watch the video. Explain they’ll see Elmo feeling sad when saying good-bye. Ask them to identify the sad feelings they saw.
- Tape the words “sad” and “miserable” in different areas of the room.
- Say, “I’m going to tell you about something that happened to Elmo. If you think he is feeling sad, walk to the ‘sad’ wall. If you think he is feeling miserable, walk to the ‘miserable’ wall.” Demonstrate walking to the different locations. Say, “Different people feel different things at different times. It’s okay if some of you feel sad but others feel miserable.”
- When you share a scenario from the clip, ask children to walk to the word that describes how Elmo is feeling.
