Partner Spotlight: Using SSIC Resources to Promote Healthy Relationships in Guilford County

December 2, 2019

The Healthy Relationships Initiative (HRI) is a partnership between the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the Phillips Foundation and a key partner in the collaborative effort of five non-profit organizations that make up our Sesame Street In Communities Partner in Guilford County. The mission of the Greensboro-based non-profit is to promote happy, healthy, and safe relationships of all kinds.

To support this mission, HRI provides relationship programs, educational workshops and helpful resources to professionals and residents of Guilford County in North Carolina. In August, the Healthy Relationships Initiative collaborated with the state’s third largest school district – Guilford County Schools, to present four professional development sessions to over 240 Early Childhood Teachers, Teacher Assistants, and Special Education professionals.

Educators left the workshop with the knowledge and skills to implement the SSIC resources in their classrooms and to teach parents to do the same in their homes. Everyone who attended the workshop received free Sesame Street in Communities resources. The training also included a guided tour of the SSIC website and resources, where participants had the option of following along on their personal devices and tablets in order to become familiar with the website. The sessions equipped teachers working in 52 school buildings and serving 1500 students aged 3-5 throughout the county.

The Healthy Relationships Initiative is planning to offer this workshop again in 2020.
