Sesame Street in Communities

Camden 2019 Year in Review

January 15, 2020

Camden is one of the newest additions to the SSIC family, having joined in April 2019 with delightful celebrations filled with fun, furry Sesame Street Muppets, and of course laughter, learning and love.  Over 600 families attended launch celebrations with SSIC partners at the Center for Family Services (CFS) and Hispanic Family Center of Southern NJ, Inc. (HFC).  Special performances and meet and greets were held with Sesame Street’s Rosita, Abby Cadabby and Alan. Each family that attended left with SSIC resources!

The unfortunate reality is, Camden is one of the most vulnerable communities in our nation with 29.4% of boys and 36.9% of girls, under 5-years-old, living below the federal poverty line.[1]

In less than 8 months, CFS and HFC have reached more than 775 young children and families with SSIC content and have distributed 3,425 SSIC toolkits with supplemental trainings and programming throughout Camden.

In a short time, seven “Comfy Cozy” spaces have been created to serve children and families throughout Camden. These spaces are currently being used for family meetings and counseling sessions, and have become the designated location for any family that needs comfort. Camden residents are embracing these “Sesametized” spaces.

Since launch, there has been a 33% increase in SSIC sessions compared to the previous period and over 2.8 million impressions were generated across targeted social media and billboard campaigns. With numbers like that, 2020 holds a lot of promise for the children and families of Southern NJ.
