Parent-Teacher Moments

Watch important everyday, informal interactions between parents and teachers.

As you watch these everyday, informal interactions between parents and teachers, reflect on how you communicate with parents, and consider new ways to do so.

It can be hard to share information with a child’s parents when we speak different languages. Consider some of these strategies:

  • Welcome families. Smile and show families that you recognize their importance in a child’s school readiness. If possible, learn some key words in their language, as well as cultural norms involved with saying hello and goodbye. Introduce families that share the same language.
  • Use technology. Use language apps to translate texts or e-mails.
  • Use visuals. Using photographs, children’s artwork, and video will help you share information about children’s strengths and needs.
